We are just weeks away from the premiere of the FX series The Strain and with that premiere will come plenty of hype about what the show is about and if it can work on television given the already gruesome reputation the show is getting. While teh series will have a great creative mind behind it in Guillermo del Toro, we can also expect there to be a certain amount of backlash against how gross the show might get.
This begs the question of whether or not the show will actually be any good or if it will just be a gross-out show that really is nothing more than a cable version of something like Saw or Hostel.
Already the show is starting to go for the gross-out factor as antics like sending fake beating hearts to journalists and putting up disturbing billboards that have been taken down are things the show is rolling with. But what fans are hoping for isn’t high brow horror but just good horror that isn’t sleazy and isn’t something that departs from the genre we all love so much.
It’s a fine line to walk between campy horror and bad horror but somewhere in there is a thread of excellent horror and that’s what many hope The Strain is as there’s a way to have a bloody good time without getting too bloody and stud in the process.
